Middlesex Empty Middlesex

Post by brown eyes sp Mon Jul 05, 2010 9:25 am

I just finished Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, and I have to say it's one of the better books I've ever read. The protagonist had an amazing voice in telling his story, and it made me want to keep reading because I felt like every single thing that happened gave me more insight into his character, even if that particular action in the book had nothing to do with him.

The story is about how a recessive gene ends up getting passed through a family until a genetic condition that causes someone to be a hermaphrodite appears in a young girl, Calliope. That may sound like a strange premise for a book, but the storytelling is flawless, and the characters are some of the most real and vivid I've read.

For those of you who write, you'll probably know what I mean. Have you ever read a book or a character and wished you'd written it? That's how this book is. I can't wait to read The Virgin Suicides, his next book.

Sounds like an interesting book. Might have to check it out one of these days. Smile

Always wanted to read The Virgin Suicides. I saw the movie a couple of times, and always wanted to read it.

Is this the book that the movie is based on?

Yeah the movie is based on the book The Virgin Suicides. I really enjoyed the movie, though I have to wonder how closely it followed the book.
